Photoshop CS2 for the Web

Need Design Help?

More techie than design-y? Know that "something doesn't look quite right" on your layout but can't figure out what?

Design 101

This most basic design book is half theory to teach you how to see design through the four principles of Proximity, Alignment, Repitition and Contrast. The second half walks you through uses these principles to remake typical MS Word-type designs to visually appealing, professional-looking designs. Software independent, designs can be created in any program (a design program like InDesign or Quark would be best, but Publisher or the like would be okay too). The basic text on design for generations of design classes.

Design 202

This super book for beginners focuses on typical layouts and then remakes them to look beautiful and more useable. Examples focus on single-page and multi-page publications, brochures, and advertisements, applying the principles design professionals live by. Book is software independent and useful for EVERYONE.

Design 202 for Companies

Same great author and series but focusing on making businesses look great. Designs include: Newsletter Design, Using Typefaces, Designing Stationary, Logos & Identity, Business Forms, Charts and Annual Reports. Again, software independent.

Photoshop Tutorials

Basic Image Editing in Photoshop
All the Photoshop books driving you crazy because they teach too much? Want to learn the most important things easily? Check out these tutorials.
(1) Learning the basics. Beginners.
(2) Learning about resizing and more complex layers. Advanced beginners.

How to Fix a Graphic for a Website
Okay, I have a graphic and now I want it to go on a website. But I don't want it really big, or all low-res pixelated. How do I format a graphic in the optimal way for a website (or e-mail)?

How to Create Animated GIFs
You want a blinking picture. Or a series of 3 or 4 pictures to repeat endlessly. Sure you can use Flash, but if you have an audience with older browsers that won't have Flash, do it as an animated GIF instead. Here's how.

How to Create an Easy Web Slideshow
Forget having to edit each photo twice, once to make it a thumbnail and once to make it fit nicely on the screen. Automate all your pictures at once -- and create the HTML file too!

How to Create the iPod Ads
iPod ad tutorialThanks to Jennifer Apple for her great tutorial on how to recreate those cool iPod ads!

Blending Images Together
Photoshop offers many ways to blend images together for a truly amazing image. Here are tutorials on three different ways. Each one creates a really differet effect. So, pick two images you want to practice blending together (a model and neighborhood; a baby picture and a current picture; a space before and after fixing up, etc.) and try these tutorials!
1. Layer Masks (easiest)
2. Layer Styles
3. Layer Groups (good for 2 or more images)
(all tutorials from Proxy magazine, pp. 17-19)

Great Free Mask Tutorials

How do you Mask, or cut-out, a model from a background. What if the model is a similar color (a green frog on a green leaf) or a child with wispy hair? Sure you can buy a special program or plug in for Photoshop (like Fluid Mask), but try these free tutorials first to learn how to do everything you can in Photoshop before buying the $200 FluidMask program. If Masking sounds scary, be sure to go over Selection tutorials first!

Here’s another easy, fun "How to Quick Mask" in Photoshop tutorial. http://www.grafx-design.com/12photo.html

If you are trying to do wispy hair I don't recommend using the Quick Mask function. I recommend using Photoshop's Extraction Filter. Here is an easy tutorial.

However, if Photoshop isn't up to the job, there are specialized tools for the job. When you are ready, here's the website for FluidMask. The "Hair and Alpha Channels" tutorial (10MB Quicktime file, be patient) for how to mask wispy edged, Afro-type hair is invaluable! Amazing tool and tutorial, huh?!
