Political Prisoners in the USA Still Need Our Help
From "Attica to Abu-Ghraib" Conference.
Fri. April 22nd - Sat. April 23rd, 2005; Berkeley, CA
President Bush said that after tearing down Abu Ghraib, he would build a "modern, maximum-security prison" as one way to wipe away the horrid stain of the prison scandal. But it is precisely these "supermax" prisons, as they are popularly known, that have come under fierce assault from prison reformers, lawmakers, and even some prison officials in the United States -- because of prisoner abuse scandals within their walls. Furthermore, these abusive supermax prisons are often filled with political prisoners -- not prisoners with serious security risks as claimed. From the US to Iraq -- free all political prisoners AND STOP TORTURING POLITICAL PRISONERS.
Read more on supermax prisons. Read summary on US abuse of political prisoners both internationally and domestically.
What is Needed for US Political Prisoners Now, essay by Co-Chair of The Jericho Movement.
The Jericho Movement is great, except for their "Pencils for AIDS Orphans in Africa" campaign. Why would revolutionaries in New York State prisons advocate such a campagin when NYS prisoners are dying in droves due to lack of condom availability and Black women in Harlem are dying for lack of health resources? And did anyone ask these kids if they'd prefer a protease inhibitor?
We support for Lynne Stewart and call for the end of harassment and imprisonment of people whose only crime is opposing the U.S. government.
